FTP storage is dedicated space on a separate server, accessed over standard FTP/SFTP, that you use for things you do not want on your main hosting account: extra backups, archive copies of large files, video and image archives, or e-mail mailbox archives.
Why a separate FTP server?
- Off-site by definition. If your main server has a problem, your backups are still safe on a different machine.
- Cheaper per gigabyte. Hosting disk is optimised for fast random reads (database queries). FTP storage is optimised for capacity. The result: more gigs for the same price.
- Does not eat your hosting quota. Backups can be huge. Keep them out of your main hosting account so you do not hit your disk limit at the worst moment.
- Works with cPanel backup automation. cPanel can automatically push backups to your FTP storage on a schedule.
Common use cases
- Off-site WordPress backups - point UpdraftPlus or BackWPup at your FTP storage and back up daily.
- Off-site cPanel full backups - cPanel's "Backup Wizard" or our managed daily backups can target FTP storage.
- E-mail archives - archive old mailboxes that you legally have to keep but no longer need active.
- Large media files - video shoots, raw photos, design source files. Better off the main hosting where they slow down everything else.
- Off-line transfer - share large files with clients via SFTP credentials instead of WeTransfer.
