Good to know

What are WHOIS and RDAP?

Every domain registry keeps a public record of each domain: who it is registered through, when it was registered and when it expires. WHOIS is the old way to read it. RDAP is the newer way, with tidier data, and it is what the big registries now use. We ask RDAP first and fall back to WHOIS, so every ending works.

Why can I not see the owner's name and details?

Privacy laws such as POPIA in South Africa protect domain owners' personal details, and most registries hide them. We never show names, email addresses, phone numbers or street addresses, even when a registry publishes them. You still see the organisation and country when they are public.

How does a .co.za transfer work?

Start the transfer with us. No transfer code is needed. The registry emails the domain's contacts to approve the move, and they have 5 days to do so. Your website and email keep working, and your expiry date stays the same. The registry does not allow transfers from 3 days before the expiry date until the 6th of the following month.

And for .com and other endings?

You need the transfer code (also called the EPP or auth code) from your current provider, and the domain must be unlocked. A domain cannot move within 60 days of being registered or transferred. For most endings a transfer adds a year to the expiry date.

Why only 3 lookups a day?

Registries limit how often anyone may ask them. The limit keeps the lookup fast and keeps our access in good standing. Looking up the same domain again within 30 minutes does not use a lookup.
