Why SEO matters for your business
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work that helps search engines find, understand and show your pages to the people looking for what you offer. A good website that nobody finds does little for a business.
- People search before they buy. When someone needs a product or a service, a search is often the first step. If your page does not show, a competitor's does.
- Search visits cost nothing per click. Google does not accept payment to rank a page higher in its normal results. Every visit you earn there is free, unlike an advert you pay for each time.
- Being found builds trust. A business that shows up for the right searches, with a clear title and description, looks established before anyone opens the page.
- Local searches bring local customers. For South African businesses, Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete Google Business Profile and pages that name your town and services help with all three.
- AI tools read the web too. Search assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read public pages to answer questions. Pages they can read and understand have a better chance of being used, although no one can promise a mention.
Why SEO needs upkeep
SEO is not a once-off job. Google updates how it ranks pages several times a year, competitors improve their sites, and your own site changes as you add to it. Over time, content goes out of date, links break, pages slow down as plugins and images pile up, and new pages go live without a proper title or description. A check every month or two catches these before they cost you visitors.

How we score
Every check has a weight and a level: critical, important or tip. A pass counts in full, a warning counts half and a fail counts nothing. Each category gets a score out of 100, and the overall score weighs them: technical and server 25%, meta data 20%, content 20%, links 15%, page structure 10%, social and rich results 10%, AI search readiness 10%. A page that search engines are told not to list (noindex, blocked in robots.txt or an error page) scores 20 at most, because nothing else matters until that is fixed.
Is this the same as my Google ranking?
No. Google uses hundreds of signals, including how useful other people find your page, which no outside tool can see. This checker finds the things you control on the page and server. Fixing them gives the page its best chance.
Where does the speed data come from?
From Google PageSpeed Insights, the same Lighthouse test Google runs, on a phone and a computer. Where Google has enough real Chrome visitors to the page, you also see Core Web Vitals from real people.
What is AI search readiness?
Whether AI search tools such as ChatGPT search, Claude and Perplexity are allowed to read the page in your robots.txt, and whether your business details are written in structured data they can read. It removes obstacles. It does not guarantee that an AI tool will quote you.
Why only 3 checks a day?
Each check reads your page, robots.txt, sitemap and links, and runs Google's speed test. The limit keeps the tool free and fast for everyone, and keeps us a polite visitor to other people's websites.
What happens to my report?
We keep it for 7 days so the link works, then delete it. It holds only what we found on the public page. Nothing about you is stored unless you choose to send the report to us.
