A domain name is the human-friendly address visitors type into a browser to find your website - trinico.cloud, example.co.za, shop.example.com. Behind the scenes computers actually find each other using numerical IP addresses (something like 196.41.124.10), and the domain name system translates between the two so you only ever have to remember the easy human version.
The bits of a domain name
Take www.trinico.cloud as an example. Read it from right to left:
- .cloud is the top-level domain (TLD). The most common ones in South Africa are .co.za, .com, .org and the newer descriptive ones like .cloud, .shop, .africa.
- trinico is the second-level domain - the unique name a business chooses and registers.
- www is a subdomain. You can add as many as you need (shop.trinico.cloud, mail.trinico.cloud, blog.trinico.cloud) without registering a new domain.
How registration works
Domain names are not bought - they are registered for a fixed period, usually one year at a time. The .za namespace is administered by the .ZA Domain Name Authority and ICANN-accredited registrars manage gTLDs like .com and .org. Trinico Cloud is connected to all the major registries, so when you register or renew with us, the change reflects at the registry directly with no middleman delay.
Choosing a good name
The best domain names are short, easy to spell out loud and obvious in their meaning. A few rules of thumb:
- .co.za is local trust. South African customers recognise it instantly and it ranks better for local searches on Google.
- .com is global reach. Pick this if you want international customers or you may expand outside SA.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers where possible - they are hard to dictate over the phone.
- Lock in both .co.za and .com if you can. It stops a competitor or squatter from grabbing the alternate version later.
Our domain search will show you which versions of a name are available across every TLD in real time:
